My Story

I'm Colin Doherty, neurologist at St. James's Hospital, Dublin the oldest and largest hospital in the state. We desperately need new facilities for our patients and families many of who are suffering life changing disorders like Epilepsy, MS, Dementia and Parkinson's disease. Help us build a new centre for treatment, education and research on the St James's campus by donating to the St James's Hospital Foundation.

Many of you have been more than generous alrdeay and I am targeting a whole new layer of donors this year. We want you to donate because you appreciate our vision for anew way of delivering care: not in the usual hard white clinical environment but in a warm welcoming space that encourages participation of the patients and families in their own care. We intend to use all the best technology to allow for video-clinics, email, Facebook and other cloud based systems. This new model will be old hat in 10 years...help us be the first to deliver it in Ireland. We need runners and financial support for our new team in the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon. Our aim is to raise funds to build the John Kirker Brain Disease Centre in order to implement a new model for patient care in neurological disease, on our existing site, through a process of re-design and renovation of existing facilities.

Our emphasis will be on new electronic based work procedures, virtual support where possible and face-to-face meetings when necessary in order to greatly improve our care environment.

We intend to create a bright airy welcoming and easily accessible space where the emphasis will be on settling the patient and their families in a comfortable clean space without the hard edged trappings of typical ‘clinical’ rooms, and in so far as possible bring services and specialist personnel to the patient rather than the other way round. This will require a unique modular design and a process flow-system that employs the latest techniques from innovative healthcare institutions around the world.

It is intended that the environment will be paperless with integrated electronic information available for both patients and staff at the point of care.
